Weekly Photo Challenge: Urban

The WordPress Weekly Photo challenge is Urban. I usually don’t snap city shots, except to capture landmarks, but I found a few images that show a sense of urban life… just click on a photo to see it larger.

A favorite of mine from San Francisco’s Chinatown.. .

…and two from Beijing showing very different shopping districts:…

And here are  some from Paris – not great photos, but definitely city shots. The first two were taken from our tour bus – one  showing a Metro subway station entrance, and the other through the front bus window down the Champs Elysees – in heavy traffic.

The last was taken from the Eiffel Tower, showing Paris rooftops and urban sprawl built over centuries!

  2. Ha! I was just in Chinatown as well and took photos of these lamp posts too. Did you get to Lombard Street? We went there as well and I have shots from above and at the bottom. There were many plantings so you don’t see the road, just the cars making their way down.

    • I do have Lombard Street photos from both ends! We actually walked UP the windy block last time we were there! I love the view from the top, where you can see down to Alcratraz one way and over to Coit Tower the other – it’s a great spot! We took a cable car back down to the bay. We actually lived in the Bay area for 4 years, and have also driven down Lombard Street – visitors always seemed to want to do that!

      • Definitely a great view from atop Lombard Street. People with cameras all over the top of the street and the bottom of the street. I wish I had taken a photo of all the photographers! How did you like living in the Bay area?

        • We loved it – but it was many years ago – our son was born there, and he now has kids of his own! It was just becoming the Silicon Valley. Many things are still the same when we visit, though, and we always enjoy stopping back when we can! 😉

Love the Paris shots…when I was there I didn’t get to go up in the Eiffel Tower because Mitterand was having dinner there…of course that was a long time ago!

    • Thanks! This is the first time either of us had been up in the tower, although we’ve been to Paris before. We were never willing to walk up or wait in the lines! We did go up to the top of the Arc de Triomphe on a prior trip, though – also a great view!

    • Thanks! Take a cable car to and/or from Chinatown – you get two attractions at once. If you plan it right, you can also take the cable car to the wharf, giving you a great view of Alcatraz in one direction and Coit Tower in another. I think there may also be a stop near the top of windy little Lombard Street!

  29. My personal preference is for nature scenes, but, as most of my career was in the city, I have found beauty in urban settings too.
