Future Challenge – Staying Physically Active

Challenge #18

Along with a healthy diet, exercise helps to keep our hearts, lungs, and brains working properly, although too many of us neglect it. We all know how important it is to exercise. Hopefully, we’re all doing something, even if it’s just walking.

As we age, our joints may complain, but it’s more important than ever to keep active, or take a chance on losing flexibility, strength, and range of motion.

So, as you get older, what will you do to keep your body in shape? Will you continue whatever you’re doing now, or will you try something new?

As part of my retirement theme,  I offer this weekly Thursday “Future Challenge” to get people of all ages thinking in general about their futures and/or retirement. Each challenge goes with a post of my own on the same general topic. Hopefully we’ll start some interesting discussions!

If you’d like to share what you think, or post on it, that’s great – and I’d love it if you’d share those thoughts in a post or comment (please tag posts TRS Future Challenge and link to this post) so others can also see them.

If you choose not to share them, that’s fine too – but with any luck, you’ll still gain some insight on where you’re headed (or would like to be), and how you can get the most out of your own journey.

For my own take on this week’s challenge, see my post

  1. As a former dancer, I love to exercise. But,now, I find that my body and my bones have a different attitude. It’s like they have a mind of their own. Sometimes, I have to bribe them with a special treat reward. It sure defeats the purpose of the whole excercise thing. Well, not really , the metabolism speeds up with all that exercise giving me a bit of extra calories I can consume. hahaha The things we have to do to keep our bodies from crumbling right before our eyes.
    Toodles …

I love to exercise, and go to the gym four times a week, as well as walking regularly. My doctor said that the answer to healthy aging, is to keep moving and don’t smoke. 🙂

Let’s say that my weight management has been my knees. I had the second one replaced about a month ago and so far twenty two pounds are gone. Granted I don’t know if that is all the bone spurs they cut out or from all the walking I am doing. I love to walk and now my grandkids are walking with me.We walk and laugh. It doesn’t get any better than that.

  4. We were talking about this the other day. We laughed at the thought of starting a weight loss clinic here on the island. During this time of the year, we sweat just by standing up or sitting down. It doesn’t take much to sweat away the pounds. So, naturally we drink lots of water and go swimming daily in the lake. We don’t have a car, so we usually walk everywhere. I don’t like to ride the motorcycle. I prefer to walk. We’re up and outside every morning at 6 am doing our outside chores. It usually involved a lot of raking, burning, and digging. Then, by 10 am it’s too hot to stay out in the sun so we retreat to our porch and the hammocks. Really, I never worry about lack of exercise in the tropics.

we recently had swimming classes to improve our styles (yes all four … we thought we might be exempt from butterfly, but no!) and improve our cardiac fitness … we loved it and hope to continue, although our pool has now closed for the winter season, and it is a 30 minute drive to the indoor heated pool … but luckily the sea has been warm and calm this week so we are keeping up a bit of practise 🙂
