Challenge #25
Are you a person who loves the heat, or one who needs it cool? Are you OK with air conditioning, or do you need your air to be fresh?
My beloved and I have spent a few weekends in the Philadelphia area recently. It’s where we grew up, and we love it there – so it’s on our short list of retirement destinations.
But… visiting and waking around in the summer has reminded us just how hot and humid it gets there. To add insult to injury, the air conditioning in my car started dying while we were there, and we were intermittently left with 85 degree fresh air while driving around.
This wouldn’t be so bad, but we both find ourselves less tolerant of the heat than we used to be – and we actually each have a different medical condition that is exacerbated by extended periods in the heat and humidity.
So my challenge to you this time is: how much will climate affect where to want to retire? A little? Not at all? What climate would you prefer? Why?
As part of my retirement theme, I offer this weekly Thursday “Future Challenge” to get people of all ages thinking in general about their futures and/or retirement. Each challenge goes with a post of my own on the same general topic. Hopefully we’ll start some interesting discussions!

Oh my, it’s cool weather all the way for me, I’m afraid I’m dreadful in the heat – anything over 80 and I’m crying on the inside. I can’t believe I managed to live through three New York summers, it nearly killed me. 🙂

Hmmmm I like the cooler weather but I also like it warm. I guess that is why when I retire I will stay right here in Michigan. You turn your head and the weather changes. I would like to take the grandkids to Alaska but I really just love right where I am.

If there was one place on the earth that had all the different types of weather I enjoy, I’d move there in a heart beat. Unfortunately, there isn’t, so I live in three places. Winters I love down in Florida. Summers I love up east along the Atlantic Ocean. Spring and fall I love up in the mountains (especially when the leaves change colors). I get to enjoy all of the four seasons without much discomfort.

Great approach! I understand Victoria, British Columbia (on the “Sunshine Coast”) is temperate most of the year, and near the water – but you seem to have all your bases covered! Thanks for sharing! 😉

I’ve yet to spend a whole summer in Florida, so we’ll have to see how I like it in maybe a year’s time. 🙂

Well, let me tell you, I am in the states right now visiting my mother at my brother’s house. My brother and his wife are on a two week vacation and they made me promise not to touch the frigid air-conditioning control in their house. Man!!! I am freezing to death here. I have to wear a jacket around the house and my fingers are frozen to the keyboard. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and turned down the air. (I’ll turn it up again right before the return.) I love the heat and I can’t stand air-conditioning. Nicaragua suits me well, except for the hottest, driest months of March and April. But, that is no problem because we plan on taking a 2 month vacation during those months to a cooler part of the world. In fact, if anyone wants to experiment with living in Nicaragua for two months, we are looking for a house sitter. You have to love heat, cats, and farm living. 🙂

I don’t like being cold so the more tropical the climate the better for me. We are in SW FL and love the summers. We boat, beach, and fish. Life is good!

I know I am hating the humidity this week for sure! I’m north of Philly in the Lehigh Valley. Love it here …. and although the air lately has been so thick you could cut it with a knife, it isn’t usually like this. Most of the year is just lovely. For these days …. it’s air conditioning, movies and malls. I’ll walk in the parks every single day come Fall!

One of our solutions is to get into a boat on a river or lake – the heat is usually less there, for some reason, and we can splash ourselves any time we like! Thanks for stopping by to comment! 😉

You hit upon something big. Because every literal body is unique, people fare better in different climate accordingly. The east coast was terrible for me, I realized after the subconscious fleeing to CA. I went to Univ of PA and taught in Philly and Cheltenham. The humidity did not suit me at all – meaning, not my preference but the compatibility with my unique needs.

I get it – as small children, my sister and I had “prickly heat” – heat rashes – often, had trouble sleeping in the summer, and she had chronic bronchitis as a baby as well. That said, I do love the Philly area, and it will always be home to me. Thanks so much for stopping by and chiming in! 😉

I appreciate that post – my niece is studying to be a naturopath (graduates next year), and often suggests helpful tinctures that have wonderful results! We forget that there are so many paths to wellness sometimes.
